Society for Chamber Music in Rochester (SCMR) concludes its 42nd season with German Masters, which features classical music and a wine tasting. In addition, audience members will enjoy an inside look at the repertoire with a pre-concert talk by Artistic Directors and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) Musicians Juliana Athayde and Erik Behr.
Athayde and Behr explain, “we conclude our season atop the Strathallan Hotel to enjoy two beautiful string quintets and the glorious views of Rochester in full spring.” The concert begins with Mendelssohn’s exuberant Viola Quintet No. 2 in B Flat Major, demonstrating his almost carefree compositional skill and originality. Athayde and Behr “are pleased to welcome back Samantha Rodriguez who recently left the RPO to join the viola section of the Milwaukee Symphony and are excited to introduce Jason Shen, the newest addition to the RPO’s cello section, to the SCMR audience.”
The second half consists of the strangely neglected masterpiece, Beethoven’s String Quintet in C Major, Op.29. Due to the final movement’s explosive pianissimo tremolos and fragmentary, combustible main theme, enhanced by ‘lightning flashes’ by the cello, this quintet has been nicknamed ‘The Storm’ in German-speaking countries. Athayde and Behr exclaim, “don’t miss this rarely performed work by one of our German masters!”
SCMR is pleased to continue complimentary wine tastings at intermission. The pre-concert talk is at 3:30pm and the performance begins at 4:00pm. Complimentary valet parking is available at the hotel.
