Celebrate African penguins, a unique species that the Zoo is working to protect through a nationally-renowned breeding program.

Penguin weekend
Learn about how Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) facilities are working to restore the African penguin population through SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction. Understand the threats to African penguins in their natural range, including oil spills, habitat depletion, human encroachment, and overfishing, and discover how individual actions can work to help save these animals from extinction.
Watch penguin feedings at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day, with interpreters and zoo keepers available to answer questions about caring for these special birds.
Free with Zoo admission.
Docents will be on grounds educating guests with penguin biofacts, and interpreters will present conservation information from the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Costal Birds (SANCCOB) and Seafood Watch.
On Sunday, members of the Kindergarten class at Midlakes Elementary School will do a brief presentation on penguins.
Please note the A Step Into Africa will be closed on June 4 as the Zoo Society prepares for its annual fundraising gala, Zoobilation.
